Cure Thyroid  problem through yoga

   Cure  Thyroid  problem through yoga

Definition:-

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland situated in the neck region. It helps the body to maintain normal temperature and is essential for the normal metabolic functioning of every cell in your body.  The thyroid gland secretes a hormone called thyroxine which is also known as T4. It is called as T4 because the hormone contains 4 iodine atoms. When a single atom of iodine is removed, T4 gets converted into T3. The amount of thyroxine produced in your body is controlled by another hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) made in the pituitary gland situated at the base of the brain.

If the thyroid gland is over productive a condition called hyperthyroidism sets in.  Hyperthyroidism happens due to an excess amount of free thyroid hormone. Some symptoms seen in a patient with hyperthyroidism include heat intolerance, nervousness, increased irritability, increased heart rate, palpitations, tremors, weight loss with the same or increased food intake, and increased frequency of defecation. Women may have a decreased frequency of menses. In hyperthyroidism, the laboratory investigation shows a low TSH and a high T3 along with an increase in the total and free T4 levels.

In hypothyroidism the symptoms seen are reversed. The patient often suffers severe fatigue, depression, loss of memory, mental confusion and sometimes even symptoms of mild psychosis. The heart rate slows down, the skin becomes dry and the patient often complains of feeling very cold. The serum cholesterol levels may be raised and there may be severe anaemia. On laboratory investigation, the T4 and free T4 levels are found to be low while the TSH is always high and T3 may be within the normal range.

Comman causes:-

The causes of hyperthyroidism are very different from those of hypothyroidism. The causes of hypothyroidism include loss of tissue, autoimmune diseases, presence of anti-thyroid antibodies, congenital defects, certain strong medications and inability of the thyroid gland to produce the right amount of hormones. The causes of hyperthyroidism are toxic goiter which is caused due to deficiency of sodium, grave’s disease, inflammation of thyroid, medications and pituitary adenoma.

 Symptoms:-

Abnormalities or diseases of the thyroid gland can cause excessive of underproduction of the thyroid hormones. Such a condition is known as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid produces an excess of the thyroid hormone and in case of hypothyroidism, the gland produces less than normal amounts of the hormone. In hypothyroidism, a person may experience constipation, jaundice, poor growth, fatigue, an inability to concentrate, carpal tunnel syndrome, weight gain, loss of hair, dry skin and loss of appetite. A person may also experience depression or lack of menstrual periods. In hyperthyroidism, there may be declining intellectual abilities, insomnia, nervousness, and behavior problems – feeling hot even in cold temperatures, increased frequency of bowel movement, excessive sweating, weight loss and pain in the joints.

 {7}Yogic diet:-

When experiencing a thyroid problem, your diet should include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Half of the daily intake should consist of fruits and vegetables. In addition to these foods, beverages like tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol should be avoided. Greasy and fleshy foods, sugars and refined flours should also be avoided.

The diet should consist of whole meal foods (cereals and grains), and potatoes. Other starchy foods like peas, lentils, beans, cheese and different kinds of nuts can also be included in the diet. Be sure to follow this diet strictly if you want it to benefit you.

 Home remedies:-

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism require cleansing of the internal system. To treat thyroid problems, special attention needs to be given to the diet. A rational diet should be adopted. With this, adequate rest and relaxation is also needed to treat thyroid problems.

In the first two months of the treatment, you should take complete bed rest for at least one day per week. While the symptoms are persistent, any kind of physical exercises should also be avoided. For five nights a week, wear a narrow compress on the waist and the neck. Such a compress is vital in helping to balance the metabolism and appetite. If you have been losing weight, the compresses will help you gain weight gradually. During the treatment, any kind of physical exertion should also be avoided.

Further suggestion:-

Smokers are more prone to developing thyroid problems therefore smoking cessation is important for preventing thyroid problems.

Green, leafy vegetables and sea food are good for Thyroid patients. Try to avoid more carbohydrates. Instead of any other fat or oil try to use coconut oil.

Cure sexual dysfunction

Cure sexual dysfunction through yoga

Definition:-

Sexual dysfunction is broadly defined as the inability to fully enjoy sexual intercourse. Specifically, sexual dysfunction is a group of disorders that interfere with a full sexual responsiveness. These disorders make it difficult for a person to enjoy or to have sexual intercourse. While sexual dysfunction rarely threatens physical health, it can take a heavy psychological toll, bringing on depression, anxiety, and debilitating feelings of inadequacy.

Alternative name:-

Description

Sexual dysfunction takes different forms in men and women. A dysfunction can be lifelong and always present, or it can be temporary and sporadic. It can be situational or generalized. In either gender, symptoms of a sexual problem include the lack or loss of sexual desire, anxiety during intercourse, pain during intercourse, or the inability to achieve orgasm. In addition, a man may have a sexual problem if he:

  • Ejaculates before he or his partner desires.
  • Does not ejaculate, or experiences delayed ejaculation.
  • Is unable to have or maintain an erection sufficient for pleasurable intercourse.

Also, a woman may have a sexual problem if she:

  • Feels vaginal or other muscles contract involuntarily before or during sex.
  • Has inadequate vaginal lubrication.

The most common sexual dysfunctions in men include:

  • Erectile dysfunction: an impairment of a man’s ability to have or maintain an erection that is firm enough for coitus or intercourse.
  • Premature ejaculation, or rapid ejaculation, with minimal sexual stimulation before, on, or shortly after penetration and before the person wishes it.
  • Ejaculatory incompetence: the inability to ejaculate within the vagina despite a firm erection and relatively high levels of sexual arousal.
  • Retarded ejaculation: a condition in which the bladder neck does not close off properly during orgasm so that the semen spurts backward into the bladder.

Female sexual dysfunctions include:

  • Sexual arousal disorder: the general arousal aspect of sexual response is inhibited. A woman with this disorder does not lubricate, her vagina does not swell, and the muscle that surrounds the outer third of the vagina does not tighten—a series of changes that normally prepare the body for orgasm (“the orgasmic platform”). Also, in this disorder, the woman typically does not feel erotic sensations.
  • Orgasmic disorder: the orgasmic component of the female sexual response is impaired. The woman may be sexually aroused but never reach orgasm.
  • Vaginismus: a condition in which the muscles around the outer third of the vagina have involuntary spasms in response to attempts at vaginal penetration.
  • Painful intercourse also known as dyspareunia.

Causes & symptoms

Many factors of both physical and psychological origin can affect sexual response and performance. Injuries, such ailments as infections, and drugs of abuse are among the physical influences. Certain prescription medications, such as drugs to regulate blood cholesterol levels, may also affect sexual functioning. In addition, there is increasing evidence that chemicals and other environmental pollutants depress sexual function. As for psychological factors, sexual dysfunction may have roots in traumatic events such as rape or incest, guilt feelings, a poor self-image, depression, chronic fatigue, certain religious beliefs, or marital problems. Dysfunction is often associated with anxiety. If a man operates under the misconception that all sexual activity must lead to intercourse and to orgasm by his partner, he may consider the act a failure if his expectations are not met.

In Chinese medicine, sexual dysfunction is considered an imbalance of yin and yang. Yin and yang are the two dependent and constantly interacting forces of energy in the world, according to ancient Chinese thought. Yin energy is receptive, dark, feminine, and cool. It is associated with the heavy, the cold, and the moist. Yang energy is masculine, active, bright, and warm. It is associated with the dry, the light, and the hot. People with sexual dysfunction who have yin deficiency are too dry and tired, causing premature ejaculation or dry and spastic conditions. Symptoms of a yang deficiency may include erectile dysfunction as well as lack of sexual appetite or excitement. There are other imbalances that can cause sexual dysfunction.

Other types of alternative medicine, such as herbalism, regard sexual dysfunction as stemming from the same causes as those recognized by Western medicine. In such alternative approaches as homeopathy, sexual dysfunction is seen as an energy deficiency in the sexual organs or the glands that regulate these organs.

Scientific appraisal in favour of yoga:-

Yoga’s view of sex is the same as of every other issue – moderation. Yoga considers sex to be a natural function, very beneficial in a loving relationship and, of course, essential for the continuation of the human race.

Yogis warn against overindulgence in sex since they consider this will deplete the life force. They state that the sexual secretions contain very concentrated life force and nutrients, since they contain the seeds of life. Depletion of life force results in a reduced vitality level and reduced resistance to disease. It also retards progress from the practice of yoga. A whole field of yoga called Hatha Yoga or Kundalini Yoga is concerned with harnessing the sexual power. Yoga enables one to get into meaningful relationships and enjoy the process, at the same time provides a path to use the powerful energy involved in sex.

The yogis consider that normal sexual function occurs when the reproductive system is in a state of optimum health. They have found that the most effective way of attaining this optimum health state is by doing yoga asanas and breathing exercises. Those who are physiologically weak and partially or wholly impotent may restore potency as they regain their physical health. Steadier practice of milder yogic exercises may yield results when more vigorous bodybuilding workouts end in undue exhaustion. Those who approach sexual matters nervously rather than relaxedly may profit from previous relaxing yogic exercises.

Marriage counselors suggest that a relaxed condition is one of the essentials for a harmonious sex relationship because when hurried and strained it leaves the couple (the woman especially) dissatisfied and irritated, adversely affecting her entire well being. Indra Devi, author of many books on yoga, remarked that “The wives of several of my students have often told me that since their husbands had taken up Yoga exercises, their marital relationships had undergone remarkable changes.”

It’s true that advanced yogis practice celibacy. They need every ounce of their life force for their quest for cosmic consciousness. They also know that the realization of their goal produces eternal bliss, besides which the brief pleasure of sex pales into insignificance. Their minds have progressed so far that they are not prepared to settle for a watered-down version of happiness.

Home Remedies:-

There are a number of home remedies that can be utilized to help overcome sexual disorders.

1. Aromatherapy has a powerful effect on the body and mind and can help to relieve stress and other psychological triggers associated with sexual disorders. Some of the essential oils that can help reduce stress and rejuvenate your sex life include lavender, jasmine, cardamom, clary sage, and rose.

2. Massage therapy can also help to relieve stress and promote blood flow to the organs of the body, including the sexual organs, to improve their functioning. Massage therapy may be combined with aromatherapy for additional benefits.

Further suggestion:-

  1. Garlic is a potent aphrodisiac and can help to cure impotence in men. Just chew on two to three cloves of garlic every day or add garlic to your meals.
  2. Try a diet composed of only fresh fruit. Following such a diet for a week can do wonders for your sex life.
  3. Yoga is another viable option for people suffering from sexual disorders. The regular practice of yoga can help to relieve sexual disorders stemming from both physiological and psychological problems.

Cure sciatica through yoga

                   Cure sciatica through yoga

  Definition:-

Sciatica is a condition involving pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the leg. It is caused by injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve.

Alternative Names

Neuropathy – sciatic nerve; Sciatic nerve dysfunction

Causes

Sciatica is a form of peripheral neuropathy. It occurs when there is damage to the sciatic nerve, located in the back of the leg. This nerve controls the muscles of the back of the knee and lower leg and provides sensation to the back of the thigh, part of the lower leg and the sole of the foot. Incomplete damage to the sciatic nerve may appear identical to damage to one of the branches of the sciatic nerve (tibial nerve dysfunction or common peroneal nerve dysfunction).

A problem in a single nerve group, such as the sciatic nerve, is classified as a mononeuropathy. The usual causes are direct trauma (often due to an injection into the buttocks), prolonged external pressure on the nerve, and pressure on the nerve from nearby body structures. It can also be caused by entrapment — pressure on the nerve where it passes through a narrow structure. The damage slows or prevents conduction of impulses through the nerve.

The sciatic nerve is commonly injured by fractures of the pelvis, gunshot wounds, or other trauma to the buttocks or thigh. Prolonged sitting or lying with pressure on the buttocks may also injure it. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, can typically damage many different nerves, including the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve may also be harmed by pressure from masses such as a tumor or abscess, or by bleeding in the pelvis.

In many cases, no cause can be identified.

Note: A ruptured lumbar disk in the spine may cause symptoms that simulate the symptoms of sciatic nerve dysfunction.

Symptoms

  • Sensation changes
    • Of the back of the calf or the sole of the foot
    • Numbness, decreased sensation
    • Tingling, burning sensation
    • Pain, may be severe
    • Abnormal sensations
  • Weakness of the knee or foot
    • Difficulty walking
    • Inability to move the foot (in severe cases)
    • Inability to bend the knee (in severe cases)

Take 5-10 g of raw turmeric or the same boiled with milk in the morning on empty stomach.

If constipative, take two ounces (60 ml) of castor oil mixed with warm milk, preferably at night.

Home remedies:-

Usually, sciatica requires immediate medical attention. However, some of the effective home remedies are:

  • Diet – A sciatica patient must strictly keep off pulses, beans, fried food, curds and other sour substances. A possible remedy can be found by drinking milk with a pinch of saffron mixed in it.
  • Lifestyle – Gentle leg exercises are recommended for such patients. There should be minimum exposure to damp and cold conditions, as they tend to aggravate the pain. If the patient wants to swim, then it should be done in warm water. Since sciatica is a problem of the spine, therefore correct sleeping posture is very necessary. A hard bed should be used without pillows or mattress. In extreme cases, the patient has to wear a lumbo-sacral belt.

Further suggestion:-

Sciatica treatments will vary from doctor to doctor and patient to patient. However, in most cases, doctors prescribe anti-inflammatory medication – unless the pain is so severe that it warrants corticosteroid injections direct into the patient’s spinal fluid. Surgery can also be considered in such instances. Heat or cold compresses can also help relieve the pain just as consistently adopting good walking, standing and sleeping postures.

In fact, postural support is one of the most important ways through which sciatica can be contained.

It thus follows that exercise can go a long way in helping alleviate sciatica as this helps keep the muscles that provide support to the spine, strong. However, such exercise must be moderated in order to prevent it from being counterproductive and contributing to the pain. Doctors will usually recommend low impact work-outs such as stretching or walking that help enhance circulation. But no form of physical exercise has as much impact as yoga.

PIMPLES

                        PIMPLES

Acne  is an inflammation of the skin that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and red spots usually called “pimples”.

Causes

The cause of acne is not fully understood. Though stress can aggravate acne, it clearly does not cause it.

Hormones. Common acne in teenagers starts with an increase in hormone production. During puberty, both boys and girls produce high levels of androgens, the male sex hormones that include testosterone. Testosterone signals the body to make more sebum, the oil produced in the skin’s oil glands.

Bacteria. Excess sebum clogs the openings to hair follicles — especially those on the face, neck, chest, and back. Bacteria grow in these clogged follicles. This makes blackheads or whiteheads, also known as ”comedones,” form on the skin’s surface. Sometimes, this clogging causes the follicle wall to break under the pressure of this buildup. When this happens, sebum leaks into nearby tissues and forms a pustule or a papule — this is called inflammatory acne. Larger, tender pustules are called nodules.

Depending on the type of pill, oral contraceptives may trigger acne in some women but suppress it in others. Some injectable contraceptives and intrauterine birth control devices (IUD) may also cause acne. Steroids taken by some bodybuilders and other athletes can also lead to severe outbreaks.

Some Other Causes-

Things that irritate your skin can also cause acne. These include:

  • rubbing or friction from your clothes
  • contact with a dog’s tongue (e.g., after a friendly lick)
  • skin contact with certain sports equipment
  • certain cosmetics
  • skin exposure to extreme temperatures

Symptoms

Symptoms and Complications of Acne

Acne symptoms vary from person to person. They include:

  • blackheads (black spots the size of a pinhead) are open right on the surface of your skin (superficial) and don’t leave scars
  • whiteheads or pustules, the most common type of acne, are usually the first lesions people get – they don’t turn black because they’re not exposed to the air
  • deep pustules and cysts look irritated; they’re usually red and swollen with visible pus
  • deep acne can be more severe – it’s usually red, inflamed, filled with pus, and painful to touch

Deep acne often appears on the back and chest. It’s usually the most difficult type of acne to treat and may leave scarring. Deep acne includes pustules and cysts, both of which can appear on the skin’s surface. Some, however, are deep in the layers of the skin. If they burst, the pus that’s released will cause more lesions.

Acne is a common skin condition characterized by pimples, mostly on the face, upper chest, shoulders, and back. It occurs in adolescence around puberty when the body starts secreting the sex hormones. It is  caused by an interaction between hormones, skin oils and bacteria that result in inflammation of hair follicles leading to black heads or cysts that may go on to form  abscesses that are  pus-filled pockets.

Sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum, lie in   the middle layer of skin (dermis) and are attached to the hair follicles. The Sebum that provides the healthy protective coating and luster to the skin reaches the surface through the pores in the skin. The secretions by these glands as well as the sweat glands that produce the watery sweat are in dynamic balance. This responds to both environmental changes (outside) and mood changes (inside). Acne is caused by excessive production of sebum that commonly happens due to the hormonal changes of puberty. Our mind controls the function of these glands through the messages that reach the skin via the  nervous system and also through several chemical messengers of the immune system (called cytokines). The internal violence produced by the uncontrolled emotional surges that go with adolescence release abnormal amounts of these messengers  that suppress the immune system. This results in  a collection of dried sebum that blocks the free flow of the same and promotes overgrowth of the bacteria; Propioni bacterium acnes, which are normally present in the hair follicle. These bacteria break down the sebum into substances that irritate the skin. The resulting inflammation and infection produce the skin eruptions that are commonly known as acne pimples. If the infection worsens, an abscess may form, which may rupture into the skin, creating even more inflammation. The situation  becomes worse with depression and the anger that follows when the person starts worrying about the facial appearance . Several types of lesions can occur in acne. Whiteheads and red papules are non painful rashes that are elevated above the surface of the skin that heal quickly leaving no scar if they are not handled and squeezed. Blackheads occur when a pore is only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum to slowly drain to the surface. The black color is not caused by dirt; it is a reaction of the skin’s own pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air. Pustules are painful rashes with  a red circle and a white or yellow centre. These are the once that can leave a scar when they heal.

Yoga can be of great help to people who suffer from problems of acne.

Scientific explanation

Yoga can be of great help to people who suffer from problems of acne. It is important to avoid constipation by a healthy vegetarian Satvic diet. Reduce the use of heavy spices such as Chillis, onion and garlic and increase the use of healthy spices such as turmeric, Jira and coriander. Use  Tulsi tea and apply Neem leaf paste (Neem based creams) to the face. Avoid non-veg, fried  food, milk products and chocolate.  Cleansing techniques such as kapalabhati several times in the day and practice of Neti Dhouti once a week are very useful. One hour of daily session of yoga should include dynamic Suryanamaskaras(12rounds), Pavanamuktasana, standing forward bending postures(Trikonasana, Parivritta Triknasana, Prasarita Padahastasana, Ardhacakrasana) and inverted postures (Viparitakarani, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana, Halasana and Sirsasana) followed by ten minutes of deep relaxation in supine posture. These help in better circulation of blood to the upper part of the body and promotes free flow of the sebum and prevents the clogging of the pores.

Pranayama(Chandranuloma Viloma 12 rounds four times a day, Nadisuddhi 12 rounds four times a day, Shitali, Seetkari and Bhramari), OM meditation (including Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi components as described in our publication “yoga for positive health”) are essential components of the daily practice to help unwind the stresses and get better mastery over the violent surges of emotions. Understanding the concepts of karma yoga and bhakti yoga helps one to move towards a balanced functioning of the mind which reflects in healthy harmonious production of the chemicals that is at the root cause of acne.

Further suggestion:-

There are a lot of lotions and medicines on the market to treat pimples but they can take time. Many natural methods are effective in treating pimples within a very short time period.

Here are the top 10 ways to get rid of pimples fast.

  1. Ice

Ice can be used to quickly get rid of pimples. It helps in improving blood circulation to the affected area, and in freezing the skin pores and removing dirt and oil accumulated on the skin. You can use ice cubes or crushed ice, whichever is convenient.

  1. Wrap the ice in a piece of cloth and hold it on the affected skin area for a few seconds.
  2. Wait a few minutes and repeat the process.

When used repeatedly on the pimples throughout the day, ice helps reduce inflammation or swelling and will immediately soothe your skin.

  1. Lemon

Another quick way to get rid of pimples is the use of lemon juice, which is rich in vitamin C. Lemon juice helps pimples dry up faster. Be sure to use fresh lemon juice and not bottled juice, which has preservatives. There are a couple of ways to apply this remedy.

  • Dip a clean cotton swab in fresh lemon juice and apply it to the pimples before going to bed.
  • You can also make a paste by mixing one tablespoon of lemon juice with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and put it on the pimples overnight. In the morning, wash the skin well with lukewarm water. However, this particular remedy is not suitable for those with sensitive skin.
  1. Honey

Honey is a source of natural antibiotics that can speed up the healing process, as well as help prevent infections.

  1. Dip and clean cotton swab in honey, put it directly on the affected area and leave it on for half an hour.
  2. Wash the skin well with lukewarm water.

Another option is to mix honey and cinnamon together to make a paste and applying it over the pimples before going to bed. In the morning, there will be less inflammation or swelling. Wash the skin well with cold water.

  1. Toothpaste

The toothpaste that you use every morning to clean your teeth also can be used to treat pimples quickly. It is most effective when used following the ice remedy. You must use white toothpaste; avoid using gel toothpaste.

  1. Apply some white toothpaste over the affected skin area before going to bed.
  2. In the morning, wash your face with water and you will see a significant improvement in the swelling.

If you wish, you can repeat the process in the daytime also. Just make sure the toothpaste remains on the pimples for at least half an hour.

  1. Steam

Steaming is wonderful for your skin at any time, but particularly when you have pimples. The steam will open your pores and allow your skin to breathe. This helps get rid of oils, dirt and bacteria trapped in the pores that can cause infection or inflammation.

  1. Fill a large container with hot water and allow the steam to come in contact with your face for a few minutes.
  2. Rinse your face with lukewarm water and, after drying, apply an oil-free moisturizer.

This treatment will also give your complexion a lovely glow.

  1. Garlic

Garlic is an antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic and antioxidant agent that can help in the fast treatment of pimples. The sulfur in garlic also promotes quick healing of pimples.

  1. Cut a fresh garlic clove into two pieces.
  2. Rub the garlic on the pimples and leave it for five minutes before washing the skin with lukewarm water.
  3. Repeat the treatment several times a day.

Eating one raw garlic clove daily can also help purify your blood. But do not to eat too much raw garlic as it can upset the stomach.

  1. Baking Soda

Baking soda is a good option for all, but especially those with sensitive skin because it will not cause any kind of skin irritation.

  1. Make a thick paste by mixing one teaspoon of baking soda with some water or lemon juice.
  2. Wash your skin well, leaving it slightly damp. Apply the paste on the affected areas and allow it to dry for a few minutes. Never keep baking soda on your skin for longer than a few minutes as it can cause dryness.
  3. Wash your face with warm water and apply a moisturizer.
  4. Repeat the process twice a day for quick results.
  5. Peppermint

Peppermint is a powerful herb that can help eliminate pimples very fast. The calming, soothing effect of the menthol present in peppermint helps reduce the irritation and redness caused by pimples. Its antibacterial and antiviral properties also help kill bacteria that causes pimples.

  1. Crush some peppermint leaves to extract the juice.
  2. Apply the juice gently on your pimples and leave it for 10 minutes.
  3. Wash your skin with cold water.

If fresh peppermint leaves are not available, you can use peppermint oil, which contains a number of vitamins and essential fatty acids. Take two to three drops of peppermint oil and apply it on your pimples. Massage the oil for a few minutes and then rinse with water.

Cure Obesity through yoga

Cure Obesity through yoga

Definition:-

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is much greater than what is considered healthy. If you are obese, you have a much higher amount of body fat than lean muscle mass.

Adults with a BMI greater than 30 are considered obese.

Anyone more than 100 pounds overweight or with a BMI greater than 40 is considered morbidly obese.

Alternative Names

Morbid obesity; Fat – obese

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Rates of obesity are climbing. The percentage of children who are overweight has doubled in the last 20 years. The percentage of adolescents who are obese has tripled in the last 20 years.

Consuming more calories than you burn leads to being overweight and, eventually, obesity. The body stores unused calories as fat. Obesity can be the result of:

  • Eating more food than the body can use
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Not getting enough exercise

Certain thyroid problems may also lead to signficant weight gain. Genetic factors play some part in the development of obesity — children of obese parents are 10 times more likely to be obese than children with parents of normal weight.

Obesity is a significant health threat. The extra weight puts unusual stress on all parts of the body. It raises your risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and gallbladder disease. Conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which were once thought to mainly affect adults, are often seen in children who are obese. Obesity may also increase the risk for some types of cancer. Persons who are obese are more likely to develop osteoarthritis and sleep apnea.

Signs and tests

The health care provider will perform a physical exam and ask questions about your medical history, eating habits, and exercise routine.

Skin fold measurements may be taken to check your body composition.

Blood tests may be done to look for thyroid or endocrine problems, which could lead to weight gain.

Complications

Medical problems commonly resulting from untreated obesity and morbid obesity include:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Certain cancers, including breast and colon
  • Depression
  • Osteoarthritis

Obesity can lead to a gradual decrease in the level of oxygen in your blood, a condition called hypoxemia. Persons who are obese may temporarily stop breathing while asleep (sleep apnea). Decreased blood oxygen levels and sleep apnea may cause a person to feel sleepy during the day. The conditions may also lead to high blood pressure and pulmonary hypertension. In extreme cases, especially when left untreated, this can lead to right-sided heart failure and ultimately death.

Many a times the glands are sluggish in our body. These sluggish glands are stimulated by yoga asana to increase their hormonal secretions. Especially the thyroid gland pays important role in our weight because it affects body metabolism.

In asanas like the shoulder stand and the fish posture thyroid gland is stimulated.  It also increases Fat metabolism so the fat is burnt and energy results in to better muscle tone and a higher vitality level.

Pranayama increases the oxygen intake to the body cells, including the fat cells. This causes increased oxidation or burning up of fat cells. Yogic exercises induce more continuous and deeper breathing which gradually burns, sometimes forcefully, many of the calories already ingested.

The relaxation and meditation aspect of Yoga has a broad spectrum.  Regular practice of meditation improves concentration and willpower. Meditation also may help stimulate insight into the unconscious motivators of your eating behavior. So the yogic practices reduce anxiety tend to reduce anxious eating. When under nervous strain we tend to gulp our food without attaining much genuine satisfaction.

The weight you gain will be healthy firm tissue, not fat. That is, yoga will tend to produce the ideal weight for you. This is due to yoga’s effect of ‘normalizing’ glandular activity.

Migraine

Migraine

Definition

only on one side of the head.

Some people who get migraines have warning symptoms, called an aura, before the actual headache begins. An aura is a group of symptoms, usually vision disturbances, that serve as a warning sign that a bad headache is coming. Most people, however, do not have such warning signs.

See also:

  • Migraine without aura (no warning symptoms)
  • Migraine with aura (visual disturbances before the headache starts)
  • Mixed tension migraine (features of both migraines and tension headache)

Alternative Names

Headache – migraine

Causes:-

A lot of people get migraines — about 11 out of 100. The headaches tend to start between the ages of 10 and 46 and may run in families. Migraines occur more often in women than men. Pregnancy may reduce the number of migraines attacks. At least 60 percent of women with a history of migraines have fewer such headaches during the last two trimesters of pregnancy.

Until the 1980s, scientists believed that migraines were due to changes in blood vessels within the brain. Today, most believe the attack actually begins in the brain itself, and involves various nerve pathways and chemicals in the brain.

A migraine attack can be triggered by stress, food, environmental changes, or some other factor. However, the exact chain of events remains unclear.

Migraine attacks may be triggered by:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bright lights, loud noises, and certain odors or perfumes
  • Physical or emotional stress
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Smoking or exposure to smoke
  • Skipping meals
  • Alcohol
  • Menstrual cycle fluctuations, birth control pills
  • Tension headaches
  • Foods containing tyramine (red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and some beans), monosodium glutamate (MSG), or nitrates (like bacon, hot dogs, and salami)
  • Other foods such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocado, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products, and fermented or pickled foods

Symptoms

Migraine headaches, which can be dull or severe, usually:

  • Feel throbbing, pounding, or pulsating
  • Are worse on one side of the head
  • Last 6 to 48 hours

Symptoms accompanying migraines include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness

Warning signs (auras) that can precede a migraine include seeing stars or zigzag lines, tunnel vision, or a temporary blind spot.

Symptoms that may linger even after the migraine has gone away include:

  • Feeling mentally dull, like your thinking is not clear or sharp
  • Increased need for sleep
  • Neck pain

For those aged above 20 on the other hand will need to force the production of their growth hormone. One great way to do this is through stretching exercises. Stretching is very essential in increasing height naturally since stretching produces lactate which is an important factor in making the production of the growth hormone active. When the growth hormone levels of the body are increase, this will make the body’s cartilages thicker and the density levels of the bone which results to height gain.

Combining a right diet and the stretching exercises will even be more effective. Eating right will help strengthen your bones which can help in lengthening your bones. Scientific explanation:-

You may have seen dwarfs acting as clowns in a circus .we laugh at them, though they have nothing to be merry about in life. They are the victims of pituitary and thyroid malfunctioning. In some the body refuses to grow, in others the mind: they remain like a child, physically and mentally. Sex characteristics are also determined by these glands.

The thyroid gland, which has the power to bestow longevity, youthfulness, incressing height, secretes its hormone straight into the blood stream. The chief ductless glands like the pituitary, the tiny pineal body ,the thyroid and parathyroid, control the other glands and other parts of the body. Though all these ductless glands are important for the proper running of the human machine .it is the thyroid which is very vital in incressing height. These glands, as we saw when dealing with Yogasana , secrete hormones without which the body will not work properly.

Further suggestion:-

The bone structure must remain elastic if one is to become taller. One must take exercise regularly. I suggest the following exercises will help one gain height:

  1. Stand in an open space in attention position. In hale deeply through the nose and extend yours arms lifting then slowly up to your shoulders. Keep your arms straight. Hold that position for
some time and then take the arms backwards as far as they will go. No inhale again the release your breath slowly, resuming the former position.
  2. Stand with your arms straight at right angles to your body. Lift the arms vertically and then bring them to the level of the shoulders. Do not exhale in the process, but stand on your toes, lifting your heels as far as they will go. Exhale slowly after some moments and resume the earlier position.
  3. Extend your arms forward up to the level of the shoulders. Inhale and fill your lungs to about one-third of their capacity. Wait for a few moments and then take your arms above your head. Now move them in a circular motion-taking them behind your back and in the former position again. Exhale slowly.
  4. Forward Bend: To do this exercise stand straight with legs wide spread. Keep your hands up straight and then bend down forward and touch the floor with your hands, without breaking your knees, then return back to your original position.
  5. Spot Jump: Keep your legs close. Stand on your toe and start jumping with your hand straight up in the air for at least 2 minutes.
  6. Bar Hanging: Hold a bar that is at least 7 feet above the ground level (so that your foot doesn’t touch the ground when you hand on the bar with your arms straight). Now swing your body while hanging to the bar. Make sure you do not swing with the help of your wrist. Keep your spine straight while swinging.

Some other Exercises to Increase Height are:
Stretching – This exercise strengthens the muscles and reduces the compressions of the discs of the invertebrate. The cartilages of the spine become thick and lengthen it increasing the height.

Hanging – The effect of gravity on the body is that it compresses the spines and makes the tissues which support the structure become thinner. This gives an appearance of being short. Hanging counteracts to this affect by making the lower torso weight stretch the spine and decrease the pull on the vertebrate. The height is known to increase by one to two inches.

Procedure: A horizontal bar should be placed high enough so as to allow the entire body to extend. In case, the whole body cannot extend, it will suffice if the knees are bend slightly to allow hanging freely. While grasping the bar, the palms should face away and the thumbs must touch. If the arms, shoulders and hips are allowed to relax, the gravity effectively pulls the body further. Wearing ankle weights increase the benefits of this exercise to increase height. The process should lasts for 20 seconds at least followed by a gap and repeated three times for sure.

Dry Land Swim: It is also known as the Alternate Leg Kick and focuses on lower back. To perform this exercise, a person has to lay down flat on the stomach and extend the body completely.

Procedure: The arms should be stretched in the forward direction with the palms facing the floor. One arm should be lifted higher than the other, say the left arm is placed above the right. Keeping the legs in straight position, the right leg should be raised off the ground as much as possible. In the initial stages, this position should be maintained for at least 4 seconds before repeating the process on other leg. However, the aim should be to reach a stage where this position is continued for 20 seconds. In order to increase the effectiveness of this exercise to increase height, wrist and ankle weights can be added to the work out. It enhances the stamina and tone up the lower back muscles further.

Pelvic Shift: It is one of the favorite exercises to increase height for all fitness instructors. It is involves feeling of the spine and hips been stretched up and down quickly.

Procedure: The exercise begins by the person lying on the back with the shoulders and arms firmly placed on the floor. The knees should be bent and the feet should be brought as close to the buttocks a possible. The back should be now brought to an arch shape letting the pelvis to thrust upwards. This position is to be held for at least 20 seconds initially, later extending it for 30 seconds. Conclusion: As with any fitness regime, exercises to increase height should be carried out regularly to see the benefits within appropriate time frame.

 Diet –

Diet For Low Blood Pressure

Eating right has always been seen as a sure cure for certain ailments and a way to keep certain illnesses and health problems away. When the patient has problems with low blood pressure, he/she should consider these dietary tips to help keep the body fit and healthy:

  • To treat low blood, a fresh fruit diet is suggested.
  • The patient is only allowed to eat all fresh fruit meals every five hours for five days straight. The next stage would be to add fresh milk to the fruit diet and this is to go on for a couple of weeks. A balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, seeds, grains, and nuts is then worked into this routine for better health.
  • Another way to treat low blood pressure with the use of food is to increase the person’s intake of protein-rich foods and vitamin B complex and vitamin C rich foods as well.
  • Many of the foods that are prohibited in people with high blood pressure are often beneficial in those who have low blood pressure. The patient only has to make sure to eat healthy and use common sense to determine if a certain food item is safe or not to eat.
  • Keeping oneself properly hydrated is essential in keeping low blood pressure away as well as in treating it. Since dehydration can cause low blood pressure, it is important for a person to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to help keep dehydration from happening.

Scientific appraisal in favour of yoga:-

The relaxation and exercise components of yoga have a major role to play in the treatment and prevention of low blood pressure (hypotension). A combination of biofeedback and yogic posture, bandha, breathing , mudra and relaxation techniques has been found to lower blood pressure and reduce the need for high blood pressure medication in people suffering from low blood pressure. In 20 patients with low blood pressure who practiced biofeedback and yoga techniques, five were able to stop their blood pressure medication completely, five were able to increese significantly the amount of medication they were taking, and another four had lower blood pressure than at the beginning of the three-month study.

 Precautions:-

  • People should drink adequate amounts of water. This helps prevent dehydration, a common cause of hypotension.
  • People who are taking medications that may cause hypotension (such as beta blockers or calcium channel blockers) should know the signs of low blood pressure. If symptoms of hypotension develop, they should visit their doctors. A doctor may then recommend a different dose or medication.
  • Individuals with heart problems should visit their doctors and cardiologists regularly. This helps reduce the risk of developing hypotension.
  • Individuals with a history of anaphylaxis should avoid substances that are known to trigger allergic reactions. These individuals should also carry an auto-injectable epinephrine device, called an EpiPen®, with them at all times. A trained family member or friend may help the patient administer the epinephrine, if necessary. Once the epinephrine auto-injector is used, patients should immediately go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital.
  • Infections should be treated promptly. This reduces the risk of developing septicemia, which may cause a sudden and dramatic drop in blood pressure.

Further suggestion:-

Following a healthy lifestyle is the best and safest way to control low blood pressure as well. Such lifestyle practice are natural, reduce greatly health risks and are absolutely cost-free.

  • To remain healthy, stay happy. Those who take stress all the time tend to develop health problems fast. Realize happiness is very essential for remaining healthy. Laugh out loud daily and release all the tensions.
  • Regularly doing exercise for at least 30 to 45 min. will help normalize your blood pressure.
  • Control your Weight.
  • Remember old saying you are what you eat, so your meal can certainly affect your BP. Eat healthy diet. Reduce sodium i.e. salt intake in your diet.
  • Drink at least 10-12 glasses of water daily.
  • Totally avoid beverages like alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.
  • As the basic cause of the disease in increased stress level try to identify things that affect you most. Then try to deal with them in a healthier way. A positive frame of mind helps most in this.

There are two types of hypertensions: Primary and secondary. Primary hypertension does not have many visible symptoms but secondary hypertension has prominent signs. It is more fatal in nature.

CAUSES

There is no specified cause of high blood pressure though it has often been traced to genetic origins. However, lifestyle and food habits often play a vital role in the development of hypertension.

  • People who lead a stress-ridden life and have hectic jobs become victims of hypertension.
  • Smokers and alcohol addicts are more prone to develop hypertension.
  • Intake of excess salt in food also leads to high blood pressure.

SYMPTOMS

  • The patients of hypertension complain of dizziness and intermittent headaches.
  • Some of them also suffer from symptoms like pain in the chest and palpitation.
  • Fatigue and breathing problems are two other prominent symptoms of hypertension.
  • The victims of high blood pressure also suffer from lack of sleep and become insomniac.

Etiology

The causes of high blood pressure vary and may include narrowing of the arteries, a greater-than-normal volume of blood, or the heart beating faster or more forcefully than it should. Any of these conditions will cause increased pressure against the artery walls. High blood pressure may also be caused by another medical problem. Most of the time, the cause is not known.

Scientific appraisal in favour of yoga:-

The relaxation and exercise components of yoga have a major role to play in the treatment and prevention of high blood pressure (hypertension). A combination of biofeedback and yogic breathing and relaxation techniques has been found to lower blood pressure and reduce the need for high blood pressure medication in people suffering from high blood pressure. In 20 patients with high blood pressure who practiced biofeedback and yoga techniques, five were able to stop their blood pressure medication completely, five were able to reduce significantly the amount of medication they were taking, and another four had lower blood pressure than at the beginning of the three-month study.
